Athenry Swans Hockey Club New Club Pitch officially opened at Raheen

As Athenry Swans Hockey club settles into its new home some of you may have seen activity in Raheen over the last six months when the Club’s new location started to take shape. All the works and renovation was carried out by the club members with support and finance from local business and individuals. The pitch was officially opened on the 20th of September with Aisling Keogh from Connaught Hockey, Anne McCormack, CEO of Hockey Ireland and local politicians, Albert Dolan, Louis O’Hara, and Shane Curley present. The club has grown steadily in its new location and now has close to one hundred active members. Eight training sessions are spread across the week. Our cohort cover male and female U7, U11, U16, social hockey both beginners and experienced and our ladies’ senior team. Already the pitch has welcomed junior teams from Tribes Hockey Club and Ballinasloe Hockey Club and junior teams have travelled to Greenfields Hockey Club in Galway. The Senior Ladies team are currently competing in Connaught Hockey Division 3 league. The creation of our new Ladies team has brought a lot of women into the club and back to the sport after life hiatuses to compete at this level as well as developing our previous underage girls. December will see the older junior boys and men travel to Tribes Hockey club for friendly matches. We are all looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Athenry Swans and please feel free to get in touch and come and try hockey. Our ethos of the club is to value respect, tradition, fair play, competition and most importantly to have enjoyment through sport so do get in touch!
